CHURCH AND STATE: does religion have a place in politics? Or have politics become a substitute for religion? In the midst of a recent school shooting and three days before his next campaign run, Senator Charles Whitmore of North Carolina begins to question his belief in a higher power, despite his conservative upbringing and all public political decisions he has made thus far. While struggling to make sense of the gun violence, private conversations about his newfound doubts are leaked to Twitter. Whitmore’s devout wife and his liberal campaign manager attempt to conceal and reverse negative publicity. Will they succeed, or did he cross the line this time?
National Public Radio called this play, “crackling, resonant, and humorous,” and Arts in L.A. said, CHURCH AND STATE is “a mesmeric production of a captivating, thought-provoking new play.”
